Tips for Preparing for your Session

When you are getting ready for have family or senior photos done, it can be stressful. I have met just about every kind of client, from the ones who are super excited and ready, to the ones who are really unsure what they’re getting into. Even when I am the one in front of the lens having our own portraits done, it can feel like it’s a combination of awkward and exciting. Ha! I’ve learned a ton over my years of photographing families and seniors, and here are a few tips to make the day a little smoother:

Plan whatever you’re eating that day, ahead of time: If your session is in the morning, make sure you’ve planned out breakfast, like an egg casserole or an overnight oat bake. If your session is later in the day, plan for hearty snacks and a meal way ahead of time, Well-fed and well-rested families (from littles up to adults) always are much happier at sessions. Plan ahead to meal prep or cook something ahead of time, so that you’re not frazzled and rushing out the door!

Borrow or purchase an iron or steamer: Wrinkles are something that really show up on camera, so it’s important that you have access to a way to press out your outfits. If you are planning outfits for your whole family, consider steaming them the day before and putting them in a travel garment bag. This keeps them fresh and clean, and away from any potential spills.

Begin introducing kids to the concept through play: For preschoolers, this is a great way to help their little minds wrap around what will take place at a session. Acting out or ‘playing photoshoot’ can get them excited about what is upcoming and make them more likely to cooperate and enjoy themselves. It also makes it less scary for them.

Relax and make memories: Many families have expressed that they love the lifestyle approach to family and senior photos, because it creates meaningful memories. I love that! I want everyone who books with me to have nothing but positive memories attached to their photo days! Even if it’s not perfect, its going to be something you’ll treasure forever.
