Tips for Family Shoots in Hot Weather

Summer sessions can be super challenging when the weather is unpredictable or you are reaching record-breaking temps. I don’t schedule families during dangerously hot temperatures in order to keep everyone safe, but we do sessions doing the summer months. If you are doing a family shoot, you may be wondering how to handle the rising temperatures and prevent everyone from having a meltdown (literally and figuratively!). Here are our “hot takes” (see what I did there?)

  • Choose breathable fabrics: Cotton and lightweight type fabrics will be the most comfortable on a hot day. If you are worried about sweat stains, be sure to apply lots of clear antiperspirant and wear colors that won’t show sweat as easily (like subtle prints). Choose silhouettes that move and aren't too tight, such as maxi dresses and wide leg slacks.

  • Stay hydrated: Fill water bottles with plenty of ice cubes that will melt and become drinkable over the course of your session. We recommend bringing at least two bottles, as well as a light towel for water spills on clothes or other items.

  • Make sure everyone is fed before the shoot: Just as in any other session, be sure everyone has full tummies and has had some protein before the shoot. This ensures that all family members will be feeling as comfortable as possible, even if it’s hot. Because it’s so hot out, people who haven’t eaten anything are more likely to pass out in the heat so it’s important to stay hydrated and fed.

  • Don’t change little ones into their outfits until the last minute. It’s okay to leave little ones in diapers or light pajamas until right before their session as it can often feel cooler than scratchy or heavy dress clothes. Be sure to choose appropriate footwear and never let little ones go barefoot on asphalt or concrete if it’s been hot outside. It can cause burns that are often unexpected.
