Tips for Your Newborn Session

If you’re a brand-new mom, you may know that newborn photos are a special memory, but you might be feeling overwhelmed at the idea. The idea of leaving the house may have you feeling stressed, much less preparing for a photoshoot. As a mom of three little boys, I understand how much work is involved. Here are some considerations as you get ready to welcome your little bundle of joy:

  • Don’t be afraid to enlist help if you have other kiddos: Nothing is better than grandparents who are around to help with a new baby, but when you book your shoot, consider asking a nanny, babysitter, friend, or family member to lend a hand if grandparents aren’t available. Choose someone who your kids are familiar with, so that you have both hands free to feed and tend to the newest family member. Having an extra adult to help can be a tremendous help and can alleviate so much stress.

  • Choose a location that is easily accessible: I love lifestyle sessions for newborns, because it is easier to get ready in your own home. It can also be easier for older siblings who may be emotional or tired from the shift in welcoming a new family member. Although we offer lifestyle sessions for these tiny ones, we can also do an outdoor or other location if you’d prefer, just let me know what you have in mind so we can help you brainstorm. Keep in mind that it’s ideal to have a location with bathrooms and a place to sit, especially with a newborn.

  • Try to schedule at an opportune time: No one understands the necessity of naps more than me, so I try to work with you to find the right time for your shoot. My availability changes based on my bookings, but please let me know if a certain time window is preferable. Unless you have booked a mini session (with a specific time frame), I can always review my schedule and help you find something perfect. A well-rested baby/older children always makes a session feel more cooperative and smooth.

  • Be flexible and patient: Understand that things may not go according to plan, and that’s okay! Be patient with yourself and your littles, whether you have one or six, and embrace the imperfections. I have worked with children and families for quite some time, and have some tricks up my sleeve, even if it feels like chaos in the moment. We always get shots that are authentic and beautiful, because they celebrate your family, just as they are. If you have concerns such as special needs, behavioral concerns, or other dynamics, please let me know so we can assist.
